A new beginning, a lifetime of stories, and a little corner of the internet where I can share the things that have stayed with me.

Welcome to my blog. I am very glad you have found your way here.

At 92, I did not quite imagine that I would be beginning a new adventure like this putting my thoughts, memories and stories out into the world in this very modern way. But here I am, and I must say I am enjoying it enormously.
I have spent a lifetime reading, writing, remembering, noticing things and wondering about them. Some of what I share here will come from pieces I have already written over the years. Some will come from work that has never been published. And some will simply begin with an ordinary thing, an apple, a banana, a book, a memory, and see where it leads us.

There will be stories, reflections on books and literature, bits of history, memories of places and people, and probably a few unexpected turns along the way. I hope there will also be room for other voices from time to time, because one of the pleasures of writing is the conversation that can grow around it.

What I would most like is for this not to feel like me speaking into an empty room. If something reminds you of your own childhood, your family, a place you once knew, a book you loved or even a fruit you cannot stand, please tell me. I shall be delighted to read your comments.

To begin properly, my next post will be about apples not simply as something we eat, but as a fruit that seems to have followed human beings through history, myth, poetry, religion, childhood and memory.

Thank you for joining me at the beginning. I hope you will come back and see where all this takes us.
